How soon will I notice the results after LASIK?
2-3 hours after the treatment, the blurriness and your vision will recover and approach the target visual acuity within one day at the earliest. You may have heavy, unnatural feeling in your eyes immediately after the treatment, but it will subside after time. It varies from person to person, but the vision will stabilize after a month or so.

How soon will I notice the results after Epi-LASIK?
3-4 days after the treatment, your vision will be blurry but 1-2 weeks after, vision will recover to a point which should not interfere with your daily life. In comparison with LASIK, it will take more time for the vision to stabilize and you may feel more discomfort. However, Epi-LASIK is applicable to more cases than LASIK. How much of my vision will recover?
It varies between individuals, their preoperative condition and target vision, however most patients gain over 20/20 vision without glasses or contact lenses. To have a general idea, your best visual acuity will about the same visual acuity as glasses or contact lenses (preoperative). For more details, please ask doctor during the consultation.

Is LASIK safe?

Is there any pain during or after the treatment?
The anesthetic eye drops make the procedure painless. Depending upon the procedure performed, for LASIK you may experience some discomfort like a stinging pain and/or a heavy feeling for a few days following the procedure. In Epi-LASIK, you may experience more discomfort than LASIK. Whichever procedure you undergo, the pain will not last long.

Can I close or move my eyes during the treatment?
You will not be able to blink your eye during the treatment, as your eye will be held open by an eyelid speculum. The excimer laser has an auto-tracker to monitor the eye's movement called an eye-tracking system. The system tracks the movement of the eye and irradiates the laser beam appropriately. If your eye makes any large movements and the system is not able to detect your eye properly, the automatically laser irradiation will stop immediately.

Is there any possibility of infection?
All surgeons are licentiate ophthalmologists. Also regarding the sterilization of surgical tools, we ensure that the use of pre-surgical antibiotic eye drops and post-surgical exams by a doctor to minimize the risk of any infections. As a result, Kobe Kanagawa Eye Clinic has had no cases of infection in our facilities.

Can the flap slip?
It rarely happens unless you rub your eye during the post-operative period or take strong hit around the eye. To help avoid such complications, we will hand you protective glasses after the procedure. If you feel that something has scratched your eye, immediately contact our clinic make arrangements for a visit.

What kinds of complications are there for LASIK?
Minor symptoms, like foreign body sensation and pink eye may occur, however, these mild symptoms fade way over time. We have no cases of severe complications through surgeries.

Can I go blind from LASIK?
In Japan, there are no reports of blindness from LASIK treatments. You will safely undergo our LASIK procedure at our world-class facilities and thorough examination and be operated by experienced doctors.

How is my night vision after the treatment?
Depending on the individual, some patients may experience Halo vision (rings around lights) or Glare vision (blinding brightness from lighting) when seeing lights at night. Such night vision issues will improve or become less disrupting after half a year.

Is there any possibility of after-effects?
Dry eye symptoms may arise after the procedure. Also, you may feel a decrease of vision in the dark. But such symptoms will recover with time. It is important to take the medication as instructed by the doctor.

Are there any scars left after the surgery?
LASIK surgery creates a flap on the surface of the cornea. Traces of the flap may remain on the surface, but they are minute and cannot be seen with the naked eye.

Is it true that LASIK will lead to presbyopia (aged eyes)?
There is no effect of progressing presbyopia by receiving LASIK surgery. Presbyopia is phenomenon in which it becomes difficult to see near objects, due to the refractive power weakening compared to younger people by losing the elasticity of the lens with age. The progression of presbyopia is independent from refractive errors (Myopia・Hyperopia・Astigmatism) and LASIK surgery, and occurs naturally to those from their 40's. It is troublesome having to carry reading glasses and eyeglasses or to wear bifocals and contact lenses when you have presbyopia. There will be a benefit of only having to use reading glasses and not needing glasses.

Will any complications occur 10-20 years after the treatment?
Problems occurring are relatively low. Refractive surgery has a long history of over 50 years and safety inspections are carried worldwide. As a result, LASIK was born and millions of people around the world have undergone LASIK surgery, many of whom have spent over 10 years without any post-operative problems. Presently, advanced technology called IntraLASIK is widely performed. Will my myopia (nearsightedness) return after the treatment?
There are some possibilities, but it really depends on your lifestyle after the treatment. Some may experience myopic regression, but your vision will not completely return to its former state. We recommend taking a break to rest your eyes to maintain good vision, when working on a computer. In a case which your vision reverts to its myopic state, an enhancement treatment is an option which is available at our clinics.

What is the difference between LASIK and other procedures?
Compared with other laser vision correction treatments, the advantages of LASIK are less pain and good vision immediately after the procedure. Given that you can continue a fairly regular lifestyle after the surgery, makes these procedures primary choice for most. However, not everyone can undergo LASIK surgery.
If your eye does not meet the minimum amount of corneal thickness necessary for the procedure, Epi-LASIK or Phakic IOL surgeries may also be an option. Our doctors will diagnose the best surgery for you, which will be based on the results of your eye examinations at our clinic.

What is the advantage of CustomVue technology?
LASIK will provide improvements of your vision, but CustomVue technology is able to correct high-order-aberrations (visual distortions) and as a result, decrease blur and enhance the "quality of vision". CustomVue is available for Premium iLASIKR, Custom Epi-LASIK, Custom-LASEK and Custom-PRK.

What is the advantage of iLASIK® and iFS IntraLASIK?
For iLASIK® and iFS IntraLASIK, we use the iFS IntraLase Laser instead of a stainless-steel microkeratome for creating the flap. A computer-controlled laser ensures fewer errors and more safety compared with conventional LASIK using a microkeratome.

Is it possible to treat astigmatism?
It is possible. However, some cases of extreme astigmatism or other abnormal conditions may be unable to treat. Please consult with our doctor when you come in for an eye examination.

Is it possible to treat hyperopia (farsightedness)?
Hyperopic correction is possible through the use of our state-of-the-art excimer laser. However, depending on the condition of the eye, there are some cases which can not to be treated. Please consult with our doctor when you come in for an eye examination.

Is it possible to treat presbyopia ("old eyes")?
LASIK is unable to treat presbyopia, as it suffers different factors from than that of refractive errors like myopia and astigmatism. However, even if you suffer from presbyopia, myopia and astigmatism can still be corrected. A big benefit of LASIK surgery is that glasses will no longer be necessary for myopia (near sightedness), but reading glasses may still be needed. For treating presbyopia, we offer multifocal IOLs not LASIK.

Can I undergo treatment for only one eye?
It is possible. For a comfortable vision after the procedure, we consider the binocular visual balance for each treatment. Please consult with our doctor if you have myopia or astigmatism in only one eye. However, in a case which you require binocular treatment, you cannot undergo the procedures for each eye on separate days.

Do I need to stay overnight at the clinic?
There is no need to stay overnight at our clinic, as it is an outpatient surgery. Although, we do recommend staying overnight at a nearby hotel for attending the post- operative eye check-up the next day for patients who are coming from a far distant to our clinic.

Do I need to attend the follow-up visits?
In the case of LASIK treatments, you must visit on the following day, 1 week, 1 month and 3 month after for regular check-ups to confirm that there are no infections and also to examine the condition of the flap.

What are the conditions to be suitable for LASIK?
We follow the conditions and guidelines provided by the Japanese Ophthalmological Society, to determine the suitability for treatments.

What kind of examinations will I need to undergo?
We require examinations for visual acuity, corneal shape and other factors through various methods using modern eye examination equipment to diagnose eye diseases or to detect any potential risks to worsen the disease. We determine the medical plan based on the results, which shows the importance of the examination stage to perform the LASIK surgery. Can I undergo LASIK even if I have dry eyes?
Generally it is possible. Patients with dry eyes can benefit from LASIK as they no longer need to wear contact lenses. Also, mild dry eyes do not affect the post-operative recovery much. However, in the case of severe dry eyes, the patient may be unable to undergo the LASIK treatment. Through the eye examination process, we will be able to diagnose whether the procedure is suitable for you; the first step would be visiting us for a consultation with one of our doctors.

Am I too young for a LASIK treatment?
Patients less than 18 year old are not suitable for refractive surgery. Although we request the minimum age of 18 years old, there is a possibility that myopia in young adults may return after the refractive correction procedure due to their vision not being stable for their young age. We may request a parent or guardian to be available when explaining the process of the consent form.

I am pregnant (or breast-feeding). Can I undergo LASIK?
Patients who are pregnant (or possibly pregnant) or breast feeding are not suitable for refractive treatment at our clinic. Some medication such as antibiotics cannot be used, which can lead to problems for the treatment. You may receive LASIK treatment after the delivery or 3 months after the breast feeding stage.

I take birth control pills. Can I undergo LASIK?
Basically it is possible. Please consult with our doctor when you come in for the initial eye examination.

Are there any cases in which I cannot undergo iLASIK® and iFS IntraLASIK?
Anyone who can undergo conventional LASIK using microkeratome is suitable for these treatments.

Are there any cases in which I cannot undergo CustomVue treatment?
CustomVue treatment depends on the condition of each individual's eye. Some may be unable to undergo this procedure.

I cannot go through daily activities without contact lenses before the procedure.
Some of patients use glasses until undergoing the procedure. Users of hard contact lenses must stop using the lenses longer which may be troublesome. However, we suggest switching to soft contact lenses as a solution until the procedure. Please attend the initial eye examination to know whether you are suitable for one of our treatments.

Can I undergo LASIK on the day of my first visit?
Yes. However, please be aware that we only offer same day treatments for iLASIK® or iFS IntraLASIK. Also, you must avoid wearing contact lenses for a specific period prior to the treatment.

How many days of work do I need to miss?
You can be back to your work 2 days after the treatment
*Please refrain from straining your eyes, including work on a PC.
*Please refrain from doing extreme fieldwork for at least 3 days.
*In the case of Epi-LASIK treatments, after the vision becomes clear (about 1 week after)

When can I start driving again?
Please refrain from driving until your vision returns to normal.

*You may sense some glare, halo or loss of night vision for a while after the procedure.

When can I start exercising?
Please refer the following table of precautions regarding sports post-LASIK.
For other sports not listed in the table, generally light exercise is allowed after 1 week, while heavy exercise must be avoided for at least 1 month. Please ask our staff for details.

What pre-cautions do I need to take after the treatment, for example when washing my face?

*This will block debris from entering your eyes.
*Apply make-up on your face except for the eyes, you may apply make-up around your eyes when you are allowed to start washing your face again.

[Smoking/Drinking alcohol | 3 days after the treatment]
*Smoking or alcohol can lessen the recovery and/or smoke can irritate your eyes.
